5 Easy Ways To Increase Social Shares Of Your Content

Increase Social Shares

So now that you have published your latest post what are you going to do? Sure that you will promote your post, drive trafic to it and share it with your social community. But what else can you do to increase social shares and traffic?

Often it looks like people are waiting for the magic to happen, which reminds me of a song by Sidney Youngblood, “All we can do is sit and wait…“?

Click here to listen to the song while reading what else you can do to increase social shares to your content.

How to increase social shares

1. Dont be anti-social

First of all, if you want your own content to be shared, don’t be anti-social and think only about yourself. If your social stream is full of self promotion, it is very unlikely that someone will share your content.

Social media has made the web all about me, me, me. - Erik Qualman Click To Tweet

Don’t just blatantly share your own stuff, but go out and share valuable content from others as well. In fact, the more you share from others the sooner you will see an increase in your own content being shared by them.

2. Make it easy to share

Make sharing your content as easy as possible. Don’t expect your audience to copy and paste your URL to their preferred social media sites or enter all the information manually. Having social sharing buttons available at prominent places is the easiest way to make sure your audience can share your content.

There are various WordPress plugins available, like Digg Digg, that will help you adding social media buttons to your content to increase social shares.

3. Create lazy tweets

If your article features content like quotes, stats or facts about your niche, you can make them easily shareable with plugins like Click to Tweet. These plugins automatically create links that allow sharing your content on Twitter with just one click of a button.

If you prefer not to install a WordPress plugin for this task, you also could create just a simple link with clicktotweet. Or create the link yourself using the following format:

http://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text=HTMLEncodedTweet

4. Offer a bribe for sharing your content

There are different things you could offer your audience in exchange for a social share. For example a free report, access to a free video of your training course or a free trial to your membership sire could do great.

If you don’t have anything to offer yet, just go and create something. You could easily create your own free info product within a couple of hours and lock it down with a WordPress plugin like Buzzinar, that reveals the download link once your visitor shared your content.

Creating your own info product is easier than you might think. You can download my report Information Product Profits, that explains exactly how to create your own info product within the next 24 hours.

5. I’ll scratch your back, you’ll scratch mine

Finally, make use of social sharing platforms such as JustRetweet or ViralContentBuzz. Those platforms will reward you with credits whenever you share other people’s content. You can accumulate those credits and exchange them later for social shares to promote your own content when needed.

Your Turn

Which of the above ways are you using to increase social shares of your content. Do you use different strategies? Share your ideas in the comments below and let’s talk about it.

    Hi Torsten,

Interesting that code from the section “Create lazy tweets”. I didn’t know it, thx!

Here’s an improvement: add %20 where a space is supposed to be (between the words) and you’ll get a better tweet 😉

      Hi Adrian,

thanks for commenting and clarifying this. Actually using %20 as substitute for space was what I meant, but as you wrote the URL explains it even better.

      Cheers,

    Hi Torsten

Great advice! Especially love #2. The amount of times that you go to blogs where there are no sharing buttons. It’s like the bloggers don’t want you to share their content! If it’s not made easy, then people simply won’t bother!

      Hi Catherine,

it is the same like mentioning a resource and not linking to it – or even worse just writing the plain URL within your content. Or asking people to leave their thoghts, but have them to register before they can comment.

If you want people to do something, make it as easy as possible and don’t build up unnecessary barriers.

    Hi Torsten

Really useful tips there, thanks. I’m going to look at the two sites you mentioned. Given that “time is limited” (for us all) is there one that you prefer over the other?

      Hi Joy,

glad that you ask. Indeed I prefer one site more than the other one and it is JustRetweet for two reasons.

As you said as well, time is limited, and at least for me, ViralContentBuzz loads much slower than JustRetweet. Also they are a bit picky when it comes to content that you are allowed to share. I had some tweets rejected for being review posts, which aren’t allowed according their terms. In fact those weren’t review tweets at all. One of them was my post about ’17 Must Have WordPress Plugins’.

So if you want to try one out, I would suggest to go with JustRetweet.

However, I like to share things I found to work well for me to help others who are still struggeling at some points.

    Hi Torsten,
Thanks for this further information. I have used the simple click to tweet links before without much success. I have just recently started to use the WordPress click to tweet plugin that makes a nice box for you. I have only used it a few times and have already noticed an increase in people sharing those.

I have used JustRetweet from time to time.
I didn’t know about the give to gain. I may look into that.
    Thanks again,

      Hi Peter,

thanks for stopping by and to leave a comment.

I deleted the other one, as both were almost identical. It was still in moderation that’s why you didn’t see it.

I remember that I saw you in JustRetweet already, I think I even retweeted one or two of your tweets. I think you will agree with it, that it works quite well and that it can produce some nice results, yes?

Anyway, you just need to look at the names inside JustRetweet to realize that also more well know bloggers are using it.

The Click to Tweet plugin works nicely, and the advantage is that you don’t have to mess with any code. I only made a change to it so that it uses my vanity URL in the tweets rather than the long URL.

      Have a great weekend,

We’ve yet to start using Click to Tweet but it sounds like such a useful tool and I’ve seen it on others’ blogs quite a lot. And definitely agree about constant self-promotion. Not only does it not get you any shares, it puts people off. Understandably! I guess you just need to find the balance between sharing other content and promoting your own material.

      Hi Ashley,

I think you are right when stating that there needs to be a balance between promoting your own material and other people’s content.

In fact I think it is even the better strategy, as people will return the favor and promote also your content. This in turn helps you to connect with a different audience and to have a broader reach.
