3 Reasons To Create Your Own Information Product

Create Your Own Information Product

Whatever route you are planning to go in your online ventures, sooner or later you will come to the point when it will be necessary to create your own information product.

I know, I hear you saying now: ‘Me, creating a product? Why? I don’t even know how!’ Especially if you are not planning to sell your own products, but rather go the affiliate way and make commissions from people you refer.

So read on and you will see the importance of having your own info product and how easy it can be to create one.

Why to create your own information product?

1. Use it to build your list

I am 100% sure you have heard it already as so many state it and you might be bored with hearing it again, ‘The money is in the list!’. Now let me tell you, this phrase isn’t true. The money is not in the list! But the money is in the relationship that you manage to build with your list!

Nevertheless, one fact stays true: Marketers that build a list do make money, and marketers that don’t build a list, don’t. That’s why it is important to get started building a list as early as possible.

There are a couple of strategies how to build a list and one of them is to offer an incentive for those who subscribe. Such an incentive is usually any kind of information product that addresses a specific problem of your audience and that your new subscribers will have access to right after their subscription.

2. Use it to increase social shares

Sharing your links on various social media sites is a great way to drive free traffic to your website. However, as you don’t want to be the only one sharing your links you will want to look for ways to increase social shares of your content by others as well.

One great strategy that works well is offering a report, ebook or video in exchange for a social share. In other words, you offer your targeted audience an information product that offers the solution to one of their problems.

You can put this whole process on complete autopilot with using a tool like Buzzinar, that reveals the download page for your information product just after your visitors shared your link with their followers on any of the social networks.

3. Use it in your affiliate promotions

If you are into affiliate marketing you might know about the importance of offering related bonuses to your customers for purchasing the offer through your affiliate link. If you don’t know how to use this technique in your affiliate promotions, you can read more about it here.

This strategy works amazingly well and is used by many affiliate marketers to oust their competition. Vendors even offer their affiliates bonuses they can use for their promotions.

However, just imagine how much better your promotion can do once you offer your own information product rather than a vendor’s bonuses or some generic products with giveaway rights. With your own related info products as bonuses you are not just able to have a unique offer, but also increase the chance of making the sale.

How to create your own information product?

Creating your own information product is easier than you might think. It takes a little bit of research, some time and just a few tools to create your first report of 10 to 15 pages that you can give away for free, use as incentive or offer as bonus.

If you want to discover how you can do it within the next 24 hours, then you might want to read how to create your own Information Product fast.

Good article Torsten! I think everyone needs to get their own product together to start building a list. There are so many advantages to having your own products.

One big one I feel is the ‘credibility’ you gain from having your own product. Credibility and trust online are essential for making sales.

    Hi Torsten.

I totally agree with you guys that having authored your own report, really adds to your credibility. Social proof is so important to buying behavior these days, and publishing your own ebook or report, goes along way in your prospects’ eyes.

    Great article. Thanks.

      Hi Al,

you are right. It is just that most people still think it is difficult to create their own information product, while in fact it is not.

Once you know how to do and what tools to use it gets quite easy to create them in a short amount of time.

    Hi Torsten,

I agree 99% with your point – except for one phrase. Guess which one 🙂 Hint: It’s bolded.

I was wondering why did you omit the main reason for creating your own info product. My reason. Not only mine 🙂

      Hi Adrian,

well, 99% is already very close, I am happy with the result. 😉

However, there are many more reasons for creating your own info product, but for this post I wanted to focus just on these three and expand on it in one of my next posts.

    Hi Torsten

Funnily enough I’ve just been writing about how having already created my own information product (two of them in fact) got me out of a hole when one of my suppliers suddenly changed the goal-posts.

    Hey Torsten,
I used to think if you create an info product of less than 100 pages, you would have not created anything of value but that was wrong.

A few weeks back, I wrote a short report of 10 pages on how to attract advertisers. It’s doing so well and I’m getting quite impressive feedback as I use it to build my list – just the way you mention.

I remember one 5 paged book I created and sold hundreds of copies on fiverr with 0 refund.

Creating an info product doesn’t have to be difficult and it isn’t. However, I’ll have to download your “Information Product Profits”. I’m sure there is something in for me

Thanks for adding value in this post

      Hey Enstine,

I think it is much more important to get straight to the point and help your audience with solving a problem that they have rather than writing a huge ebook that is filled with fluff, just to make it more lenghty.

As your example shows, even a 5 page report can do well with your customers or prospects, if it gives them the solution they are looking for.

      Thanks for adding this info,

It took me quite some time to create my very first product online, but I am SO GLAD I bit the bullet and finally created one!

I love it for all the reasons you give above, but there’s nothing better than getting up in the morning and seeing that you made a few more sales while you were sleeping. 🙂

Once you create a product, it continues to sell without any additional work on your part. After all, isn’t that why we create affiliate programs? 🙂

    Great article!

      Hi Bonnie,

I agree with you, there’s nothing better than seeing the sales coming in, once you decided to sell your product.

I think this decision will be the next logical step for someone who just started and now realized how easy it is to create their own information product.

Setting up a sales funnel and attracting affiliates to promote your offer can then make continuously.

I really need to get around to finishing my stuff – I have several sitting part done… Of course, I have short reports and ebooks scattered about.

A product doesn’t have to be huge to be useful 🙂

      Hi Jan,

you are absolutely right, it isn’t about the length of the info product. A short report can do well, if it helps your audience to solve their problem.

As Enstine mentioned above, his report did well and he sold hundreds of them, although it had just 5 pages.

So go ahead and finish your already started products to get them out. 😉

    Hey Torsten

It can be quite overwhelming making your own product, but I don’t know anyone that has regretted it! It is worth taking some time to think about, as this can really help give a blog a boost.

The great thing is that there are so many options to choose from too, so everyone should be able to find something they can work with 🙂

    Hi Torsten,

Excellent post! I will never tire of hearing ‘The money is in the list!’ because it’s true! My biggest list builders to date have been my information products, so I couldn’t agree more with this.

Information products are also a fantastic source of permanent revenue for an online business, other than updates to make sure the product is fresh, you can create something that will last a lifetime… and won’t take up any room in the stockroom! 😉

    Hi Torsten,
Wow your blog is great. I must come here more often.

My favourite reason for creating my own products ( apart from the list, oh and the money, oh and the sense of achievement and credibility)
    – Is the totally FREE traffic that affiliates and JV partners send to your sales page! Like magic!
It is a thing of beauty.
